Avoiding Stress at the Dentist

There’s no getting around it – many people don’t like going to the dentist. In fact, some people dread it so much that they avoid going to the dentist until serious repairs are needed inside their mouths. While no one enjoys going to the doctor or the dentist, it is no reason to not visit your dentist regularly. Speaking with your dentist about your anxieties is the best way to alleviate stress and fear associated with going to the dentist.

If you have fear regarding visiting your dentist, speak with them. Most dentists will not take this personally, and will do everything they can to make each visit more comfortable. Your dentist may recommend you bring in your own music to listen to with headphones, as this can relax many patients. Your dentist may also be able to give you relaxation tips, and encourage you to breath deeply during your regular cleanings. Speaking with your dentist about what helps you relax will also help the situation. If you want to know what’s going on with your procedures, tell your dentist so they can describe exactly what they are doing every step of the way. Other people may not find this as helpful. During regular cleanings, if your teeth are very sensitive, you may request a topical anesthetic that comes in the form of a balm. This balm can temporarily numb your mouth and help alleviate any soreness associated with deep cleaning and flossing.

Don’t let your anxieties about going to the dentist affect the health of your teeth and gums. Speaking openly with your dentist about your fears associated with getting your teeth cleaned, and ask them for advice and ways they can help you. Most qualified dentists will be more than happy to help you relieve stress and help you overcome your fear of the dentist. While it’s normal to fear dental visits, it’s no reason to let the health of your teeth and gums suffer. Talk with your dentist about your anxieties today.

Dental Care for Young Children

As adults, we all understand the importance of daily, vigilant dental care and how necessary it is to visit a dentist regularly. However, young children may not be convinced of the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth. As children begin to grow teeth and become old enough to care for their teeth themselves it’s necessary to encourage proper dental care for optimum tooth health.

Once your child is old enough to care for their own teeth, you should begin setting a good example for them. Brush and floss every day, and be sure to explain to your children why they need to care for their teeth. By showing your children how you care for your teeth they will better understand the importance of caring for their own teeth. Reward children for proper dental hygiene – but don’t do it with candy! Stickers and other small trinkets make great rewards for young children when they properly care for their teeth. Keep an eye on your children in the first few years of tooth care (3-5 years) to be sure they are brushing properly. Make sure your children know to brush their teeth for 3 minutes. If it helps, sing a 3-minute song to your children while they brush their teeth so they can sing it in their heads when you are not around.

Many dentists recommend fluoride toothpaste while your child’s teeth are still growing. Only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for your children to be sure they don’t swallow an abundance of the cleaner. As with your own teeth, it’s important that your children see a dentist every six months to be sure their teeth are growing healthy and without any damage. Speak with your dentist about any and all questions you have regarding the growth of your child’s teeth and always encourage proper dental hygiene for your children.

The Best Dental Care: Prevention

Dentists love keeping mouths healthy, and teaching people of all ages about how to keep teeth and gums strong and beautiful. Any dentist will tell you that the best type of dental care is not obtained through visiting your dentist. The best type of dental care starts with your own personal prevention.

Prevention is the best type of dental care because it stops a problem from happening before it starts. Regular brushing twice a day for at least three minutes each time will ensure that food particles and plaque are removed from your teeth. If you don’t remove plaque from your teeth you can develop tartar and cavities. Tartar and cavities can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease, both of which can result in bad breath and expensive dental repair work. Regular flossing (at least once a day) can also prevent these types of issues in your mouth. Flossing helps remove plaque from hard to reach places in your teeth, and can also remove food particles that have built up throughout the day. Another way to prevent dental problems is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Crunchy apples and carrots will help strengthen your teeth, and the nutrients in these and other healthy foods will help keep your teeth strong and intact.

No one wants expensive and uncomfortable dental repair. Visit your dentist every six months for a routine dental cleaning to catch a potential problem before it occurs. Catching a troubled area in your mouth before it becomes a major problem is also a form of preventative dental care. Talk with your dentist about other ways to prevent gum disease, gingivitis and other problems in your mouth. Prevention is the number one way to avoid unsightly and unpleasant dental disease in your teeth and gums. Remember, the best dental care starts with you.
