Avoid Bad Habits & Follow these Steps for Proper Ways to Brush Your Teeth

According to the American Dental Hygienist’ Association it is recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. This seems like an easy task, but do you know the proper way to brush your teeth? There are several methods to accomplish this, and generally, they obtain the desired results. In this article we will cover a few ways to achieve great dental heath simply by properly brushing your teeth.

The basic necessities to achieve this task is; one toothbrush, one tube of toothpaste, and a set of teeth. We will start out by placing a dab of toothpaste onto the toothbrush. Now, it is important to alternate starting points each time we brush. The reason we do this is, the initial start point receives a large dosage of toothpaste, and this may cause some problems or irritation so it is good practice to alternate starting points.

Begin brushing along the bite portion of the molars. You should use a circular motion while performing this. Try to push the Brussels of the toothbrush into the cracks between teeth. After you complete the bite portion of the teeth, move along the outer surface. Angle the toothbrush at a forty-five degree angle so that the Brussels are able to massage the gums. Avoid using a back-and-forth motion. Doing this will irritate the gums, and cause the gums to recede. Try brushing in a downwards motion. This will push the plaque and any food waste down off of the teeth. Use this technique around the entire outer surface of the mouth.

Once the outer surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the inner surfaces will need some attention. Most toothbrushes have extended Brussels towards the tip of the brush. These extended Brussels are intended for brushing the back side of the teeth. Angle the toothbrush so that you can brush downwards to clean the backside of your mouth.

Do not forget to floss afterwards. Flossing will secure a solid cleaning, and promote healthier gums.

Cosmetic Dentistry – What You Should Know

Today, many people go to a cosmetic dentist because they want to have a beautiful smile. Cosmetic dentistry is a technique to improve the way your teeth look. That’s why this method has become so popular and sought now. We know that general dentistry deals with the treatment and diagnosis of various conditions of the patient. Though cosmetic dentistry is about the way your teeth and smile look that is based on beauty and looks, most cosmetic dentists also are trained to deal with the treatment and diagnosis of various conditions. So the bottom line is even though cosmetic dentistry is related to your appearance they also can treat you just like a general dentist can.

If you have decided that you need the services of a cosmetic dentist, there are some things you will want to consider. One of them is the reality of having some pain. Many of the procedures can cause the gums and teeth to be irritated or swollen. To make patients more comfortable, cosmetic dentists use the same type of local anesthetics that help reduce the pain just like other types of dentists.

Tooth whitening, implants or denture repairs are just a few the things cosmetic dentistry can do for you to create your gorgeous smile. Discuss with your dentist first before you make your final decision so you have a very good idea what to expect through the process as well as the end result.

The reasons why people go to the dentist have to do with one of two things; the pain they are in and need relief or they are looking to correct or enhance the way their teeth or smile appears. Cosmetic dentistry can also repair teeth that have been damaged by illness, infection, heredity or other accidents that dislodge or damage teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can improve a person’s psychological outlook as well. Many cosmetic procedures have not long-term effects. The good news is cosmetic dentistry lasts a long time though you do need to go in for regular check ups and cleanings to get the most out of the procedure.

After knowing the benefits of cosmetic dentistry, the next step is choosing the right cosmetic dentist. Does the cosmetic dentist you are looking to hire have the needed skills, equipment and bedside manner that you would expect from a professional dentist? The answer to this will let you know if you have found the right person or if you need to keep looking.

Children’s Dental Health

You should start caring for children’s teeth at an early age. This will help them grow up with healthy teeth and gums. Children start developing teeth before birth. There are two sets of teeth: milk teeth and permanent teeth. Milk teeth develop at about six months and they are twenty in number. Permanent teeth start to develop at the age of six years old and most of them are in by the time they reach thirteen years. Wisdom teeth erupt around the age of seventeen. All these teeth need proper hygiene and health.

The following are specific areas to help in achieving good dental health for your children.

  1. Visiting a dentist. It is advisable to take your child to a dentist routinely for dental check-ups. This should be done before the developing teeth have broken through the surface. The dentist will look at the child’s gum and/or teeth and count the teeth that have erupted and spot any early signs of decay. This will also enhance the relationship of the child with the dentist in later stages. Regular check-ups will be recommended by your dentist.
  2. Diet. As parents, you should care about the foods you give to children. Sugar should be avoided as it encourages tooth decay. How often does your child eat sugary foods? Also acid foods and drinks like sodas should be controlled.  Keep fizzy drinks, candied sweets and cakes to the minimum as they lead to decay; but emphasize fruits, vegetables and milk. They contain natural sugars that don’t lead to the fast decay that processed sugars do. However, you should never allow a baby to go to sleep with a bottle of milk. If milk is allowed to stay in a baby’s mouth and not swallowed it can be bad for tooth development.
  3. Tooth brushing. Your children’s teeth should be cleaned as soon as they start erupting from the gums. This should first be done with special tooth brushes for babies and should be done regularly in the morning and before bedtime for about two minutes. When the child is old enough you should encourage your child to brush his/her teeth.
  4. Toothpaste to use. Use toothpaste with fluoride as this will make the tooth enamel resistant to decay.
  5. Fissure sealants. A child may have deep crevices in their permanent teeth. This will make it difficult for them to clean; therefore it is advisable to seal the fissures with a resin film to protect the surface from decay. Ask your dentist if this is something your child needs.

Reasons to Choose Composite Fillings

For most of us, we will have to have at least one filling of some sort in our lifetimes. Unfortunately, it will be more than one filling for the vast majority. But it can be confusing at times what material you should choose for what filling.

The most widely used material for fillings today is the silver amalgam fillings and composite fillings that is tooth colored. Knowing this, it makes sense that any tooth that others would see when you smiled should be filled with this composite material. That way there is no distinction between your tooth and the filling.

While most think of fillings when you have cavities, there are other things that can happen that you should also consider using the composite filling material. You might not think it possible but this material can be used to close the space between two teeth. Of course you will want to check with your dentist first.

You can also use this type of filling material when your teeth have decayed or have been worn down by gritting or chomping. If those practices have caused teeth to crack or break, the composite filling can be used as long as the break has not gone through the tooth and to the bone. In that case you will need a more extensive procedure.

The composite material is very strong but it doesn’t last forever. In fact, here is not a dental filling material that will last forever so there may be a time it will need to be replaced. That’s not to say that under normal circumstances it won’t last a very long time.

Also under normal conditions you can get the tooth filled and fixed in one appointment. The tooth is numbed so the dentist can remove any decay or rough edges. It is then cleaned and dried and prepared to take on the filling material. If need be, the dentist might place some medication to help prevent any type of infection.

Once the filling has been placed the dentist will shape and polish it and make sure it matches your other teeth. You will be given instructions on what to do and how to care for the tooth over the next few days until you are back to normal.

If you ever have any problems, you should call the dentist and they will make sure to answer your questions and get you back in the office if necessary.
