Our teeth are an important part of our body. Without our teeth, we would have difficulty chewing our food. With the Western diets that many people around the world are consuming, dentists say that our teeth might not last us until the age of 50. Mostly, unhealthy foods for the teeth are being eaten by a majority of the world’s population. Children and adults alike devour record breaking numbers of sugar rich soft drinks, junk food, and sweetened fruit drinks. As tasty as these snacks may sound, there is little nutritional value with these items. The problem with too much sugar in your mouth is that once bacteria comes into contact with the sugar, acid attacks your teeth. If this kind of poor diet continues, your teeth will start decaying, and you will end up with no teeth at an early age. Your diet and oral health are important, if you want to live a long and happy life.

So, what should you do to maintain that perfect smile and white strong teeth?

You should start with maintaining a healthy diet. Your diet is one of the major contributing factors that affect your oral health, as well as your overall well being. As much as possible, avoid eating too much sugar. Fruits and vegetables along with the right amounts of meat, poultry and fish are good for your body and teeth. Drink milk every morning because the calcium you get will strengthen your teeth’s enamel. Always drink water at least eight times a day.

You should brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride. You should also floss or use a mouthwash cleaner to get rid of plaque in your mouth. Dentist visits are also recommended, so that you get a good idea of your current oral health. Your dentist will need to perform regular teeth cleanings to maintain your teeth.

The basics of dental care greatly affect your smile, and how you interact with other people. A clean set of teeth is the first step in good dental health. The American Dental Association has some guidelines to help you clean your teeth in the best possible way.

Tips for Proper Brushing

Do not rush when brushing your teeth. You should brush your teeth twice daily, and take time to clean your teeth effectively.

Use the right tools. All you need is a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste with fluoride. A battery-operated toothbrush or electric toothbrush can help if you have issues with proper brushing.

Use the right technique. Your toothbrush should be slightly angled and do a back-and-forth motion. Brush your teeth thoroughly, including the tongue. Do not brush too vigorously as it may damage your gums.

Keep your toothbrush clean. Rinse your toothbrush properly after brushing. Rinse it with water and dry it before your next use. Place it in an upright position, and cover it to prevent bacteria from getting onto your brush.

Replace your brush when necessary. Buy a new toothbrush whenever your current one is worn.

Flossing Your Teeth

Flossing is important for reaching in between teeth, where most toothbrushes cannot reach.

Use at least 18 inches of floss and wrap it around the index finger of both hands. Floss every space in between teeth, but do it thoroughly in every space. Rub the tooth and gums to completely eliminate plaque that was left while brushing.

Waxed floss may be easier and more effective to use. You can also find toothpicks designed with floss that can be effective.

Other than the usual brushing and flossing, it is also essential to use mouthwash in reducing plaque left on teeth. Mouth wash rinses not only the teeth, but the whole mouth, including the tongue, gums and cheeks. Scheduling dental cleanings and examinations every 6 months is also part of dental care basics. Schedule an appointment if you see signs and symptoms of dental problems.

Cavities are dental holes that affect the enamel and the dentin of the tooth. The enamel and the dentin are two layers of the tooth which is the white outer layer and the inner yellow layer respectively. They protect the tooth’s pulp where the nerves and the blood vessels reside. Almost 90% of the population is affected by dental cavities. Minor cavities are unnoticeable and may not cause pain. Large cavities accumulate food, and may affect the pulp of the tooth and bring bacterial toxins. This may bring pain to the patient.

Bacteria, a cause of cavities in the mouth, collects sugar, which transforms into acid plaque. This is different than periodontal plaque which causes gum disease. Acid plaque softens the layer of the enamel and the dentin which dissolves the saliva causing holes or cavities in the tooth. It is necessary to visit your dentist to fill the tooth to prevent further erosion of the tooth and pulp damage which may lead to infection, pulp death and tooth abscess. Pulp damage requires tooth extraction or a root canal to remove and replace the pulp. Children are more susceptible to cavities because baby teeth are porous and immature. It takes 7 years for the chalky, porous enamel to be changed to a dense, mature, shiny and hard enamel.

Cavities are preventable through proper nutrition, less snacks in between meals, good dental hygiene, use of topical sealants, and dental fluorides. In filling dental cavities, the dentist will clean first your teeth using hand instruments or rotary instruments known as handpieces. After cleaning, it will be filled with amalgam silver, composite material or porcelain to repair the tooth. The cheapest and commonly used filling is the dental amalgam or the silver filling.

Most people think that cavities happen in children only, but what they do not know is that with aging comes cavities also. Pregnant women are also prone to cavities due to the sweet foods they usually eat. Visiting your dentist will help you know if you have cavities.

Periodontal disease is an infection of gums, bones and tissues that surround and support the teeth. The early stage and the most common form is gingivitis, which is a non-destructive form of periodontal disease, which causes painful and swollen gums. The more destructive form is periodontis, which may cause bones to break out and teeth to fall out.

There are many factors that can lead to periodontal disease. Plaque that has developed inside the mouth can infect tissue that surrounds the teeth, causing tooth decay and tartar buildup. If left untreated, these bacteria would infect the gums, tissues and teeth leading to periodontal disease. Other known causes include poor dental hygiene, illness, pregnancy and diabetes. Brushing vigorously, misaligned teeth, and using unclean mouth appliances such as retainers, braces, and dentures can also cause injury to the gums. A visit to a professional dentist may stop the formation of bacteria and prevent inflammation in the mouth.

The following are early warning signs of periodontal disease:

Bleeding gums every time you brush

Dark red or swollen gums

Bad breath

Bad taste within the mouth

Chewing difficulty

Risk of periodontal disease may possibly increase due to heredity or genetic factors, stress, ulcers, smoking, diabetes, AIDS, psychological disorders, osteoporosis, and even hormonal changes. To prevent periodontal disease, you need to have good dental hygiene, and visit your dentist every 6 months or more frequently if you have warning signs already. Proper brushing of your teeth for 2 minutes should also be done after every meal, while flossing should be for 2 to 3 minutes. Anti-plaque or anti-tartar toothpaste may be recommended for people who show early signs. For severe forms of periodontal disease, a more extensive treatment is necessary. Such treatment may involve using of dental apparatus, medications, and surgical operations.

Never underestimate the importance of having a clean and healthy mouth. Teeth and gums can affect total health problems and can lead to serious diseases, such as periodontal disease, if not properly taken care of. Do not take your teeth for granted; brushing alone may not be enough to maintain cleanliness and oral hygiene.

The most essential part of dental hygiene happens at home. Brushing and flossing daily is probably the most important thing that we can do to prevent tooth decay, cavities, and dental ailments. Removing the plaque can prevent cavities and this could happen only if we brush and floss our teeth daily. We can do this by brushing our teeth 2 times a day and floss at least once a day. Brushing can stimulate the gums and keeps it healthy and can also prevent gum disease. Flossing and brushing are two things that we should not neglect each day to keep our gums and teeth healthy.

How often should you brush your teeth?

The American Dental Association says that brushing teeth at least twice daily can remove plaque which may cause tooth decay and gum disease. In brushing your teeth, use a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste that has fluoride. Ensure that your toothbrush fits well in your mouth so you are able to reach all areas in your mouth easily. Use gentle strokes when brushing and make sure that you brush all areas of your mouth such as teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Brushing your tongue will remove the bacteria, and can help maintain fresh breath.

How often should you floss your teeth?

Flossing teeth should be done once a day. You should floss areas between teeth to remove food debris and plaque. Flossing can help germs between teeth that can’t be reached by tooth brushing alone. Plaque triggers tooth decay and gum diseases. Recent study showed that flossing can help prevent stroke and heart attack. Insert the floss in between your teeth when flossing. Be careful not to snap because it can damage your gum tissue. Move the floss in a gentle way upward and downward in the spaces between teeth and near the gums. Make sure that all sides of the teeth are flossed. There are dental products available such as disposable dental floss which can make flossing easier.

Along with brushing and flossing, regular check ups with your dentist and proper eating habits can lessen your risk of oral related diseases such as gingivitis, periodontal disease and others.

Dental restorations, of any variety, entails restoring the tooth in order to restore the integrity and function of the damaged or missing tooth. This is usually done when a tooth has been missing, or there is a need to replace a chipped tooth. Although tooth decay isn’t as big of a problem anymore due to people’s increased knowledge about dental hygiene and the use of fluorides, it is no doubt that teeth are still at risk of infection, tooth decay and damage. A good dentist, modern technology and improved techniques are all it takes to help you bring back a beautiful smile.

The two types of dental restoration are direct restorations and indirect restorations. Both restorations can be further classified according to size and location. A restorative technique known as root canal can help in filling the spaces where dental pulp resides. Direct restorations are done directly to the tooth, while indirect restoration is done away from the tooth. This is usually done inside the laboratory. Examples of indirect restoration are veneers, bridges, and crowns. Direct restoration, on the other hand, involves amalgam or composite fillings, or other restorative materials.

There are many reasons why people choose restorative techniques:

It restores the ability of chewing and eating

It replaces unattractive and old dental procedures

It replaces missing or lost teeth

It repairs decayed and damaged teeth

It relieves dental pain

It prevents tooth loss

It corrects and improves improper bite.

It fills up space in between teeth

It enhances your smile

Dental restoration involves two steps. Preparing the tooth for replacement and the actual replacement of the material. Preparation may involve procedures like cutting of tooth with dental burrs, making space for the restorative materials that will be placed, or removing tooth decay or tooth parts that are unpleasant. Temporary restoration may be performed if permanent can’t be done right away after preparation.

Gum disease can be dangerous for everyone, because it can bring about serious medical conditions. This is because oral health can greatly affect one’s overall health. Research shows that gum disease can lead to other major conditions like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and more. A simple gum disease can cause problems to other parts of the body through the gums. The bacteria in your mouth can enter into the gums, and eventually go to the bloodstream, bringing bacteria to other parts of the body. It will be more damaging if the gum tissue breaks down, which can lead to infection that may breakdown bone.

Good dental health can give you the following health benefits:

Lower risk of heart attack

Lower risk of stroke

Lower risk of respiratory disease

Reduced risk of pancreatic cancer

Prevent birth defects

Prevent underweight babies

Good oral hygiene is a must whether or not you have gum disease in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums. In doing so, take into consideration the following factors:

Brushing. Use a soft bristle when brushing your teeth. Brush your teeth at least twice daily to prevent bacteria build up. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every three months, and buy those that have soft bristles. If you are sick, you may soak your toothbrush in an anti-bacterial mouthwash to kill the germs.

Floss. Flossing your teeth everyday will take away the food left in your teeth. Sometimes brushing alone does not remove all the food particles left in your teeth.

Use mouthwash. Using a mouthwash when you have gum disease is important. An antibacterial mouthwash is better to eliminate the bacteria. After you have been cured of your gum disease, you can use a more mild mouthwash or warm water with salt.

Avoid sugar. Avoid sugary, processed and refined foods.

Do not smoke. Smoking can harm the gums even more. It lowers your body’s immune system.

Visit your dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

Everybody knows that we should take care of our teeth regularly. If you neglect your teeth, it can cause tooth decay, poor gums, and cavities. Follow these simple steps in caring for your teeth:

Regularly brush your teeth. Brushing teeth should be done two times a day for at least 2 minutes. Ensure that you cover the whole mouth including the tongue. It is best to do your brushing right after lunch and before going to sleep. For the first two minutes of your brushing, use a dry bristle toothbrush.

Floss your teeth after eating to remove any food that is stuck between your teeth. Make use of a tongue scraper to clean the tongue. You can use your toothbrush if you do not have a tongue scraper. Use a fluoride mouthwash to rinse thoroughly the inside of your mouth. It also helps to strengthen the enamel of your teeth.

Select the right food to eat. Prevent constant snacks which may cause plaque accumulation in your teeth thus increasing the possibility of a cavity. Eat cheese instead of chocolates. Cheese is a good source of calcium, which is needed by your teeth. Avoid sticky and sweet foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water also. Avoid fruit juices, because they contain much sugar.

Visit your dentist twice a year, even if you don’t have dental problems. A dental cleaning is necessary to thoroughly clean your mouth. They also give you feedback and advice on how to properly care for your teeth.

There are lots of misconceptions about proper cleaning of teeth. In brushing your teeth, apply only a small amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush. Change your toothbrush often or at least after three months. Use a circular motion in brushing your teeth and always aim at the gum line. Chewing gums can help keep moisture inside your mouth but be sure to chew gums with xylitol. Avoid doing things that can damage your teeth such as smoking and eating too much sweets.

There are two different types of dental fillings according to the American Dental Association. These are the Amalgam filling, and the resin, or composite, filling. If you are planning to get dental fillings, knowing the advantages and side effects of each type will help you decide which dental filling to get.

Amalgam fillings have been widely used for many years now. This can be made of copper, silver, tin, mercury, and other metal elements. This is usually done if there is cavity and to repair tooth decay, fractures, broken or cracked tooth, or a worn tooth. The affected part of the tooth is removed and then replaced with the amalgam filling. Amalgam fillings are long lasting and can last for many years. Disadvantages of amalgam fillings include temporary sensitivity, big part of the tooth is removed to fill in the silver filling, and the silver color looks unnatural when seen by others. The metals used may also contract or expand in due time which may cause damage to the teeth. The process in amalgam filling is shorter than the composite filling.

Composite filling, like amalgam fillings, are also best in repairing broken, cracked, decayed, and worn or chipped teeth. It can also work to close gaps in between teeth. Composite fillings are made of a resin, and has the same color as the tooth. It is also durable, fracture resistant and may require less tooth removal in cases of a damaged tooth. Disadvantages of composite fillings include a longer process of filling, because tooth needs to be completely dry and clean prior to application of the filling. It may also give discoloration due to stains.

The cost of composite and amalgam filling are quite similar. Factors that may affect the cost of both fillings are the size of filling, method done by the dentist, and the materials used in the process. To prevent decay and cavities on the filling, it is recommended that one must have good dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth daily and flossing help prevents build up on the teeth.

Dental implants are a procedure performed by a periodontist where an artificial tooth is placed in your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or group of teeth or a bridge. This is usually performed for people with good dental health, but have lost their tooth because of periodontal disease, injury or another reason. Implants are more high-tech in nature than the traditional bridgework. Unlike bridgework, dental implants do not depend on surrounding teeth for support.

Implants give a natural look and feel, so you might forget that you have lost a tooth. It will bring back your confidence – personally and professionally. Dental implants may also help to prevent spaces from missing teeth, secure your dentures, and help you if you’re having difficulty chewing. Implants give you the feeling of having your own teeth. They can last a lifetime when performed properly, and with diligent maintenance by the patient. It is considered the best solution for missing tooth or teeth problems.

Uses for dental implants:

Replaces tooth or teeth without affecting neighboring teeth.

Provides support to the bridge, and prevents the need for partial denture removal.

Provides support to the dentures making it more comfortable, safe and secure.

Dental Implants’ Benefits:

Look. Dental implants gives you the look and feel of having your own tooth! While dental implants incorporate into the part of your bone, it prevents gum recession and bone loss that usually go with dentures and bridgework. No one will ever recognize that you have a dental implant.

Tooth-saving. Dental implants will not sacrifice your other teeth like in a bridge because your other teeth are not modified to hold the implant. Most of your teeth are untouched, which is an important benefit for your oral hygiene and health!

Confidence. Implants will let you speak again, eat, and smile with confidence and comfort! They are safe and secure and offer freedom from the clicks and wobbles of dentures. They’ll let you say goodbye to denture worries and problems and messy glues and pastes.

Reliable. The success of dental implants is very predictable. They are considered the best option for tooth replacement.
