Reasons to Choose Composite Fillings

For most of us, we will have to have at least one filling of some sort in our lifetimes. Unfortunately, it will be more than one filling for the vast majority. But it can be confusing at times what material you should choose for what filling.

The most widely used material for fillings today is the silver amalgam fillings and composite fillings that is tooth colored. Knowing this, it makes sense that any tooth that others would see when you smiled should be filled with this composite material. That way there is no distinction between your tooth and the filling.

While most think of fillings when you have cavities, there are other things that can happen that you should also consider using the composite filling material. You might not think it possible but this material can be used to close the space between two teeth. Of course you will want to check with your dentist first.

You can also use this type of filling material when your teeth have decayed or have been worn down by gritting or chomping. If those practices have caused teeth to crack or break, the composite filling can be used as long as the break has not gone through the tooth and to the bone. In that case you will need a more extensive procedure.

The composite material is very strong but it doesn’t last forever. In fact, here is not a dental filling material that will last forever so there may be a time it will need to be replaced. That’s not to say that under normal circumstances it won’t last a very long time.

Also under normal conditions you can get the tooth filled and fixed in one appointment. The tooth is numbed so the dentist can remove any decay or rough edges. It is then cleaned and dried and prepared to take on the filling material. If need be, the dentist might place some medication to help prevent any type of infection.

Once the filling has been placed the dentist will shape and polish it and make sure it matches your other teeth. You will be given instructions on what to do and how to care for the tooth over the next few days until you are back to normal.

If you ever have any problems, you should call the dentist and they will make sure to answer your questions and get you back in the office if necessary.

When to Use an Amalgam Filling

Amalgam Filling

An amalgam filling is a silver material that is used for fillings and is a natural choice, because of cost, for fillings you can’t see due to cavities and other affected teeth. However, there are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.

As with most dental restorations, amalgam fillings are not permanent and may someday need replacement. They are great for cracked or broken teeth. These fillings are usually placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove decay as necessary before proceeding with the filling procedure.

It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when amalgam fillings are first placed, however this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling. You will be given post-care instructions at the completion of your treatment. As with any dental procedure, if you have any problems or questions, we advice you contact us right away.
